Strengthening Safety Along Panglao’s Tourist Areas
BOHOL - Bohol officials are pushing for the faster completion and operation of several tourism-related infrastructure projects in Panglao as the province continues to strengthen safety measures in one of its most popular destinations. Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado and Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chairperson Mark Lapid recently inspected projects supported by TIEZA, including shoreline protection facilities, a floating dock, and a hyperbaric chamber center. The inspection focused on identifying remaining requirements and ensuring that the facilities can provide practical benefits to residents, businesses, and visitors.
Shoreline Protection and Safer Beach Access
One of the projects inspected was the Alona Shoreline Rehabilitation and Slope Protection project, which is intended to protect the beach and nearby establishments from strong waves while creating a safer environment for tourists. Officials also examined the floating dock at Alona Beach, which is designed to make boarding and disembarking safer for visitors participating in scuba diving activities and island tours. The facility offers an alternative to the previous practice of having boats approach directly toward the shoreline, helping organize water-based tourism activities and reduce potential safety risks.
Hyperbaric Chamber Could Strengthen Diving Safety
The planned Hyperbaric Chamber Center is another major component of the province’s tourism safety efforts. Because Panglao is an established scuba diving destination, officials emphasized the importance of having emergency medical infrastructure capable of responding to diving-related incidents. Aumentado and Lapid agreed that the facility should begin operations as soon as possible and be staffed by properly trained professionals. Beyond diving emergencies, the chamber may also have applications in certain medical and wellness treatments, although these uses would require appropriate medical supervision and professional guidance.
Building a Safer and More Sustainable Tourism Destination
The continuing coordination between Bohol’s provincial government and TIEZA reflects the province’s effort to improve tourism infrastructure while preparing for future visitor demand. Better shoreline protection, organized access for water activities, emergency facilities, and responsible waste management can contribute to a more secure and sustainable tourism environment. As Panglao continues to attract domestic and international travelers, these projects could help ensure that tourism growth is supported by infrastructure that protects both visitors and the natural attractions that make Bohol a major destination.
