Bohol Sets Ambitious Goals for Dairy Development
BOHOL - The Municipality of Talibon hosted the 10th Bohol Dairy Festival, where Gov. Aris Aumentado presented a long-term vision of establishing Bohol as the “Dairy Capital of the Visayas.” Reflecting on the province’s first decade of dairy development, the governor said the industry has continued to strengthen and urged stakeholders to pursue greater achievements during the next 10 years. He identified four priorities: expanding the number of individuals and organizations involved in dairy production, encouraging young people to pursue dairy farming, developing more trained dairy professionals, and securing stronger national government support for projects that can maximize the industry’s economic potential. The Provincial Government also reaffirmed its commitment to providing resources and manpower to help turn the province’s dairy ambitions into reality.
Farmers, Government Agencies, and Markets Drive Industry Growth
National and local officials highlighted the importance of cooperation, technology, training, and stronger markets in developing Bohol’s dairy sector. National Dairy Authority OIC Operations Manager Rowena Bautista reported that Bohol currently produces 830,218 liters of milk and has 4,972 dairy animals, representing about 3 percent of the national inventory. She also noted that the 600-hectare Ubay Stock Farm could support between 100 and 150 milking cows. Meanwhile, Talibon Mayor Janette A. Garcia announced that the municipal government has allocated PHP2 million for buffalo growing to support livestock and dairy production. Board Member Lucille Y. Lagunay also emphasized the need to strengthen marketing and demand, while encouraging farmers to explore government programs that could help expand livestock production and improve their access to markets.
Festival Showcases Dairy Products, Farmers, and Future Opportunities
The 10th Bohol Dairy Festival also featured exhibits of dairy and feed products, technical sessions on goat and cattle farming, discussions on disease prevention, and strategies for controlling bacterial infections. The event included the launching of the BODACO jingle, recognition of outstanding dairy farmers, equipment turnover, and the ceremonial distribution of cattle. Talibon’s hosting marked another stage in the festival’s rotation, following previous editions held in Ubay, Mabini, San Miguel, and Candijay. With participation from the Philippine Carabao Center, National Dairy Authority, Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Training Institute, local government units, cooperatives, and other partner organizations, the festival provided a platform for strengthening collaboration and building a more sustainable dairy industry in Bohol.
