Cagayan de Oro (CDO) is undergoing a dual transformation as it prepares to host major global events while simultaneously modernizing its urban services. As the city is named the host for the 2026 UN Tourism World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism, it is also navigating a critical recalibration of its public transportation sector to meet international standards.
Taxi Fare Recalibration and the Fuel Crisis
The LTFRB-10’s decision to implement a ₱10 increase in the taxi flag-down rate was driven by urgent appeals from transport groups struggling with the Middle East-induced fuel crisis. While the increase was approved in 2025, its implementation was deferred until April 20, 2026, to provide relief to drivers without overburdening commuters. Operators who can afford recalibration are moving toward digital meters that include GNSS, Wi-Fi, and CCTV, aligning with the national PUV Modernization Program. This reform is vital for maintaining the quality of urban mobility as the city expects an influx of international delegates for the upcoming gastronomy forum.
Hosting the 10th UN Tourism World Forum
Cagayan de Oro’s selection to host the 2026 UN Tourism World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism marks its entry onto the world stage. This flagship event will bring together over 150 countries to discuss how food can serve as a bridge between cultures and a driver of sustainable tourism. The hosting opportunity validates the city’s "Kaon Ta" (Let’s Eat) festival and its high contribution to the region’s tourism value-added. Tourism Secretary Frasco noted that CDO’s commitment to strengthening local food systems and empowering youth and women makes it an "exceptional host" for this global dialogue.
The "Silicon Valley" Township and Industrial Growth
The city’s real estate sector is evolving to support its growing international profile, highlighted by Pueblo de Oro’s (PDO) expansion into the 31-hectare Southridge township. Envisioned as a "Silicon Valley-type" community, the project features high-end residential towers, BPO facilities, and retail zones designed by San Francisco-based architectural firm Gensler. Furthermore, the city is exploring the construction of a World Trade Center within the township to host future business exhibitions and conventions. These developments, coupled with a 6.8% GDP growth rate, reinforce CDO’s position as Mindanao’s most competitive investment center.
