As the Philippines assumes the rotating chairmanship of ASEAN for 2026, Cebu City has taken center stage as the host for the 45th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF). This week, specifically between April 18 and April 21, local officials and the Department of Tourism (DOT) have unveiled a comprehensive plan to showcase "Old Cebu" to over 2,000 global delegates. This initiative focuses on the restoration and beautification of the city’s most iconic landmarks, transforming them from simple sightseeing stops into immersive cultural theaters.
A Global Spotlight on the Parian District
The Parian district, home to the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House and the Heritage of Cebu Monument, is undergoing a major aesthetic revival to welcome international tourism ministers this week. Mayor Nestor Archival confirmed the creation of a specialized task force dedicated to the restoration of these heritage assets, ensuring they serve as the primary narrative of Cebu’s pre-colonial and Spanish history. Delegates are being treated to structured walks through Colon Street, the oldest in the country, where heritage buildings now stand alongside vibrant cultural shows. This "perception-first" strategy aims to establish Cebu as a reliable hub for international diplomacy and high-value cultural tourism long after the forum concludes.
Reviving the "ABC" Strategy
Provincial and city tourism stakeholders are re-emphasizing the "ABCs" of Cebu tourism—Adventure, Beaches, and Culture—to stay competitive against rising regional hubs like Vietnam. This strategy is anchored on the "Connected by Taste" theme, which uses traditional food and indigenous storytelling to deepen the visitor's connection to the land. During the CIIS 2026 summit, industry leaders noted that global travelers now seek authenticity over mass-market leisure, prompting a shift toward "inclusive growth" that benefits local artisans and heritage keepers. By linking these cultural assets with modern gateway infrastructure, Cebu is signaling its readiness to host the world’s most sophisticated travelers.
Community Impact of High-Profile Events
The hosting of ATF 2026 is expected to provide a substantial economic boost to local sectors including retail, agriculture, and the creative industries. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized that these policies must translate into real livelihoods for farmers, fisherfolk, and hospitality workers who support the tourism ecosystem. The city government has deployed over 2,400 personnel to ensure that the influx of delegates remains orderly and safe, building on a track record of "zero-incident" management during the recent Holy Week. As Cebu matures into a Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) powerhouse, the focus remains on delivering a quality of experience that reflects genuine Cebuano hospitality.
