MAKATI CITY — A new Japanese lounge restaurant at Alphaland Makati Place, bringing together worldclass industrial design and authentic Japanese flavors. Located on the ground floor at the corner of Malugay Street and Ayala Avenue Extension, Akira Makati is the first restaurant concept created by internationally renowned industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue. The venture is a collaboration with Gilbert Go, owner and president of Golden PotBelly Pig Corporation.
A Dining Space Inspired by Nature
Cobonpue’s design for Akira draws from an imagined forest clearing in a secluded corner of Japan. The 155 square meter space accommodates 80 guests and features a teppanyaki table and a sushi bar surrounded by the designer’s iconic red Yoda chairs. Polished raw concrete floors represent the earth, while tall wooden elements mimic leafless trees. Suspended from the ceiling is a canopy of silk “dancing” leaves in autumn shades of reddish brown, plum, and orange, which appear to float when illuminated at night. Gilbert Go wanted to simulate the feeling of being outdoors, and Cobonpue’s attention to detail resulted in a space described as “a magical and secret place known only to you”. The designer was so meticulous that the hanging leaves were restrung and rehung six times.
Collaboration and Culinary Highlights
This Akira branch is distinct from others in the chain, as it is the only one fully envisioned by Cobonpue. Go, a fellow Cebuano and a long-time friend of the designer, gave him complete creative freedom to shape the restaurant’s interiors. In recognition of this partnership, the Unagi Kyu Maki was renamed the Cobonpue Roll. The menu spans sushi, sashimi, tempura, and teppanyaki, with specialities such as A4 Japanese Wagyu Teppanyaki, Foie Gras Chawan, and Chicken Karaage. The space also includes a bare gray wall that can project images of Tokyo, making it suitable for meetings and private events.
A New Dining Destination in Makati
By merging contemporary industrial design with the traditions of Japanese cuisine, Akira offers a new dining experience that appeals to both design enthusiasts and food lovers. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., it provides a refined yet welcoming atmosphere for lunches, dinners, and after-work gatherings. The collaboration between Cobonpue and Go highlights how thoughtful design can enhance the enjoyment of food, making Akira a notable addition to Makati’s vibrant culinary landscape.
