Despite those circumstances, the city retained the festival as part of its annual calendar, keeping attention on the people and industries that have long shaped General Santos. Tuna-industry workers, fisherfolk, entrepreneurs, and residents remain part of the celebration, giving the event a distinctly community-focused character while the city continues addressing the effects of the disaster.
A Night Market With a Purpose
The festival also includes a concrete recovery measure for businesses. Executive Order No. 49-2026 authorized the “Bangon Gensan: Tuna Festival Recovery Night Market 2026,” specifically intended to support earthquake-affected micro, small, and medium enterprises. Rather than presenting recovery only as a theme, the initiative gives affected entrepreneurs a designated opportunity to participate in a festival-related marketplace. This creates a direct connection between celebration and livelihood, allowing the annual event to serve another purpose during a challenging period. The measure does not mean every affected business has recovered, but it does demonstrate that the festival program includes an activity specifically designed around businesses dealing with the earthquake’s economic effects.

General Santos Tourism’s official event listing shows that the festival continues to feature recognizable activities, including the Tuna Float Parade, culinary competitions, Sashimi Night, concerts, and the Fish Port Tour. The national government also declared September 5 a special non-working day in General Santos City in connection with the 28th Tuna Festival. These details show that the celebration has not abandoned its familiar character even while its 2026 edition carries a different context.
