Located in the highlands of Valencia and Sibulan, just about 14 kilometers from Dumaguete City, Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park is one of the most important eco-tourism destinations in Negros Oriental. The park is home to two crater lakes—Lake Balinsasayao and Lake Danao—surrounded by dense forests, mountain ridges, and rich biodiversity.
Declared a protected area in 2000, the site has become a key destination for travelers seeking cool mountain air, scenic landscapes, and a peaceful escape from the city.
Twin Crater Lakes Formed by Ancient Volcanic Activity
The highlight of the park is its two natural crater lakes, separated by a narrow ridge of forested mountains. Lake Balinsasayao is the larger of the two, while Lake Danao offers a quieter and more secluded atmosphere. Both lakes are believed to have formed through ancient volcanic activity in the Mount Talinis range, creating deep freshwater basins surrounded by thick vegetation. The reflective waters often mirror the surrounding forest and sky, producing a calm and almost surreal landscape.
Rich Biodiversity and Protected Forest Ecosystem
Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park is part of a larger watershed that supports multiple river systems in Negros Oriental. Its forests are home to a wide range of plant and animal species, including several endemic and endangered wildlife. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts often visit the park due to its diverse avifauna, while the surrounding dipterocarp forests provide habitat for mammals such as bats, wild pigs, and other forest species. This ecological richness makes the park one of the most important conservation areas in the region.
Activities for Nature Lovers and Adventure Seekers
Visitors to the Twin Lakes can enjoy a variety of eco-tourism activities. Boat rides across the calm waters of Lake Balinsasayao offer a peaceful way to explore the landscape, while kayaking provides a more active experience on the lake. Hiking trails around the park allow guests to discover forest viewpoints, birdlife, and shaded natural paths. The cool mountain climate also makes the area ideal for picnics, photography, and simple relaxation away from urban life.
