It’s no longer just about the destination; it’s about the memory. This weekend, the Cebu International Investment Summit (CIIS 2026) has solidified the province’s status as a complete, investment-ready market that is moving far beyond seasonal leisure.
The "ABC" of Cebuano Tourism
Cebu Provincial Administrator Ace Durano highlighted that the province’s strength lies in its Adventure, Beaches, and Culture (ABCs). During the summit sessions on April 17, Durano emphasized that the revival of Cebu’s tourism is a shared victory between the provincial government and a highly capable private sector. He noted that Cebu is uniquely positioned to offer what global travelers seek in 2026: authentic, culturally grounded experiences that go deeper than traditional sightseeing. By leveraging partnerships with the creative industry and international artists, the province is aiming to break its previous arrival records. This "Experience-First" strategy is the core of the province's 2026-2027 marketing plan.
Lifestyle Hubs and Township Innovation
Michelle Leslie Llanos of SM Supermalls and Cleofe Albiso of Megaworld Hotels discussed the evolution of mixed-use developments into "Lifestyle Hubs." These integrated townships are no longer just places to shop; they are dynamic economic platforms that combine residential units, schools, and offices with "experience-driven" retail. This model is particularly successful in Cebu, where travelers are looking for "all-in-one" destinations that cater to specific needs, including Halal-friendly facilities for Muslim travelers. By broadening the scope of its tourism appeal, Cebu is successfully transitioning from a weekend getaway to a primary long-stay destination for the Asian market. The synergy between retail and hospitality is now the primary driver of the province’s urban growth.
Aviation and Infrastructure Readiness
The summit also addressed the critical role of aviation and route development. Rafael Aboitiz of Aboitiz InfraCapital noted that while Central Visayas remains the most visited region, there is still significant room for growth in direct international flights. The 2026 roadmap involves aggressive negotiations for new "Gateway Routes" that connect Cebu directly to primary European and North American markets. This infrastructure readiness is seen as the "final piece" of the puzzle that will allow Cebu to emerge as one of Asia’s next major tourism powerhouses. For the 2026 investor, the message from CIIS is clear: the fundamental platforms for massive growth are already in place and operational.
