Cebu has officially secured the most prestigious invitation in the world of food tourism. This April, the United Nations has confirmed that the shores of Mactan will serve as the global stage for a high-level summit that aims to turn "taste" into a tool for international economic survival.
The "Connected by Taste" Global Mandate
For the local tourism industry, the story is about the institutionalization of the Filipino kitchen. Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco announced this week that the 2026 forum will convene global leaders and Michelin-starred chefs to discuss food as a "bridge between cultures." The theme, "Connected by Taste," follows the success of the 2024 regional forum in Cebu, which produced the landmark "Cebu Call to Action." This 2026 hosting is a state-level recognition that culinary heritage is now as vital to the national identity as beaches or history.
Economic Empowerment Through the Palate
This movement is driving the integration of local food systems into the global supply chain. Statistics released this April show that food and beverage services now account for over 17% of total inbound tourism expenditure in the Philippines. The forum will focus on how regional flavors can empower youth and women while preserving the indigenous farming practices of the Visayas. By showcasing Cebu’s "Michelin-selected" dining scene alongside street-level lechon vendors, the event aims to prove that gastronomy is a powerful force for inclusive growth.
The Road to UNESCO Creative Status
Government officials are leveraging this summit to solidify Cebu’s bid for the UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy title. Following Iloilo's successful designation, Cebu is constructing the "institutional scaffolding" necessary to dominate the global experience economy. This includes training thousands of hospitality workers in "Heritage Service" and upgrading local food security protocols. For the 2026 traveler, this means that every meal in Cebu will soon come with a story of sustainability and cultural pride. By the end of 2026, this forum is expected to have injected millions into the local service economy.
