NABUNTURAN, Davao de Oro — The Governor's Cup 2026 Under-17 football tournament opened on October 3, 2026, at the Nabunturan Central Elementary School football field, marking a major push to strengthen the sport across the province. Team Nabunturan wasted no time asserting dominance, routing Laak 20-0 in the opening match.
A Vision for Football Development
Sports Coordinator Kristine Anne Mabanglo revealed during the opening program that the tournament is an initiative of Governor Raul Mabanglo. The goal is to fortify the province's football program and provide young athletes a competitive platform. The competition runs every Saturday and Sunday at the same venue.
Governor Mabanglo ensured football would be included alongside basketball and volleyball in the Governor's Cup. Davao de Oro is nationally recognized for producing talented football players who consistently earn medals in Batang Pilipino and Palarong Pambansa. The province's strong reputation in the sport made its inclusion essential.
The governor encouraged athletes and teams to continue developing their skills. He emphasized that football showcases not only talent but also discipline and character. The provincial government pledged continued support for programs that nurture young athletes and elevate the sport.
Nabunturan's Scoring Barrage
Nabunturan, fresh from winning the recent Provincial Meet, showed why they are a force to reckon with. The team treated their home field like a training ground, finding the net at will against a Laak squad still finding its footing. The 20-0 victory sent a clear message to other contenders.
Zechariah Jude Aguilar, Lionelle Hashim Morilla, and Wynne Hernando each recorded hat tricks to lead the charge. Zion Benedict Xavier Conde and DM Xavier Estañol contributed two goals apiece. Rynz Rasonabe, Duane Luis Omandam, John Zhedric Lado, Albert Roland Paig, Kent Joseph Habana, and Marc Rave Suazo added one goal each.
Despite the lopsided result, Laak expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete. Team officials admitted their squad is newly formed and welcomed the tournament as valuable training experience. The exposure will help them grow and improve in future competitions.
Montevista Edges Monkayo in Tight Contest
In another match, Montevista secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Monkayo. Zai John Dela Cruz scored the lone goal that made the difference, capitalizing on a scoring opportunity to lift his team to victory. The win marked Montevista's first triumph in the tournament.
Montevista's defense played a crucial role in preserving the lead. The backline held firm against Monkayo's attacks, denying equalizing chances and securing the clean sheet. Their discipline and composure under pressure proved decisive in a match where chances were scarce.
Broad Community Support
The tournament enjoys backing from Congresswoman Maricar Zamora-Mabanglo and Congressman Jhong Ceniza, along with the 11 mayors of Davao de Oro. Their collective support underscores the province's commitment to youth sports development. The collaboration between provincial and national leaders ensures resources and attention flow toward grassroots football.
The Governor's Cup provides young players a stage to display their abilities and catch the attention of scouts. It also fosters camaraderie among municipalities and promotes healthy competition. As the tournament progresses, more exciting matches are expected in the coming weekends.
