A Unique Shrine Built Within a Cave
Located in Sitio Basak, Barangay Rizal, Maasin City, Monte Cueva Shrine is one of Southern Leyte’s most recognized religious attractions. Unlike traditional churches, the shrine’s chapel is situated inside a cave on a mountainside, creating a unique setting where faith and nature come together. The peaceful environment and wooded surroundings provide visitors with a quiet place for prayer, reflection, and spiritual journeys.
A Journey of Devotion and Reflection
Reaching Monte Cueva requires visitors to climb more than 500 steps, with the path featuring the 14 Stations of the Cross along the way. The climb has become part of the pilgrimage experience, allowing devotees to reflect while making their way toward the cave chapel. The shrine is especially visited during Holy Week and the celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s birthday on September 8, when many pilgrims gather for prayer and devotion.
A Spiritual Landmark in Southern Leyte Tourism
Beyond its religious importance, Monte Cueva Shrine has become one of Maasin City’s key tourism destinations. Its combination of natural scenery, cultural significance, and spiritual atmosphere attracts both pilgrims and travelers exploring Southern Leyte. As part of the province’s pilgrimage tourism offerings, the shrine continues to represent the deep faith and heritage of the local community while providing visitors with a meaningful travel experience.
