HONG KONG — The Migrant Workers Office in Hong Kong has announced a final extension for the LIKHA Global 2026 Business Plan Competition, giving overseas Filipino workers until July 15 to turn their entrepreneurial dreams into a funded reality. The competition offers mentorship, coaching, and up to ₱500,000 in seed capital to jumpstart homecoming enterprises.

A Final Extension for Dreamers

The submission deadline was moved to accommodate OFWs still refining their business ideas. MWO-HK urged the community not to let hesitation steal a rare opportunity, stressing that the digital portal will close strictly on July 15. Procrastination, officers said, has been the biggest barrier for otherwise qualified applicants.

The extension follows the inspiring trajectory of previous Hong Kong contenders who almost missed their chance. Organizers want every kababayan with a viable business concept to step forward and claim the support system that the government and its partners have built specifically for returning workers.

From Employee to Business Owner

LIKHA stands for “Linangin ang Kakayahan sa Kabuhayan Award,” a flagship reintegration program of the Department of Migrant Workers. Unlike emergency livelihood assistance, the competition is a proactive mechanism that encourages OFWs to develop a solid business plan while they are still employed abroad.

The program bridges the critical gap between a worker’s savings and a sustainable enterprise. By requiring a detailed business model canvas, LIKHA ensures that participants think through their market, operations, and finances long before they book a one‑way ticket home.

Eligibility and How to Apply

Applicants must be currently working overseas with at least five years of total deployment experience. They need active OWWA membership, complete documentation, and must not own an existing business in the Philippines. The requirements are designed to support serious individuals ready to transition into full‑time entrepreneurship.

Registration is entirely online through the official DMW portal. Interested OFWs simply fill out the digital forms, draft a business model canvas, and upload supporting documents. The streamlined process respects the demanding schedules of Hong Kong’s domestic workers and service professionals.

Mentorship and Seed Capital Await

Shortlisted participants receive one‑on‑one coaching from industry mentors who help refine pricing, branding, and operational workflows. Business planning workshops further sharpen their pitches before the national finals. The grand winner takes home up to ₱500,000 in seed capital to launch the enterprise.

The mentoring component sets LIKHA apart from typical competitions. Experts walk each finalist through real‑world challenges, from supplier negotiation to digital marketing. This hands‑on guidance substantially increases the survival rate of OFW‑founded businesses once they open their doors in the Philippines.

A Legacy of OFW Success

In 2025, Marisol Amihan, a Qatar‑based OFW, won the national title with a community farming proposal that impressed judges with its feasibility and social impact. Her victory inspired hundreds of other migrant workers to view entrepreneurship as a dignified and achievable path back home.

Hong Kong’s own Shenny, Marilou, and Daren also advanced to the national stage, proving that domestic workers and service staff can compete with professionals from other regions. Their journey from hesitation to the spotlight is a powerful reminder that a well‑prepared business plan can rewrite a family’s future.
