Davao — In a significant move to bolster mental health support across the Davao Region, the Southern Philippines Medical Center–Institute of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine (SPMC-IPBM) has officially launched its Crisis Hotline Unit. The service, which began operations on July 1, 2026, aims to provide immediate, professional assistance to individuals navigating emotional distress, suicidal thoughts, and psychological crises. By making specialized care more accessible, the SPMC-IPBM is transforming the way the community approaches mental health, moving beyond traditional clinical settings to offer a direct, life-saving lifeline to anyone in need.
Bridging the Gap in Mental Health Access
The crisis hotline is a proactive response to the rising mental health concerns observed nationwide, providing a vital bridge for those who may not have immediate access to hospital-based psychiatric care. Staffed by a dedicated team of psychiatric nurses, psychologists, and psychometricians, the unit utilizes professional triage and stabilization models to offer emotional support and facilitate necessary referrals. During the launching ceremony, Medical Center Chief II Dr. Ricardo B. Audan described the initiative not merely as a telephone service, but as the "opening of a lifeline," emphasizing that every answered call represents an opportunity to provide hope, compassion, and a turning point for someone in deep distress.
Commitment to Community-Based Care
Aligned with the provisions of Republic Act No. 11036, or the Mental Health Act, the SPMC-IPBM’s new unit is part of a broader goal to make mental healthcare a shared, accessible responsibility. The service currently operates from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with the institution actively working toward expanding to 24-hour availability in the near future. The public is encouraged to reach out for help without hesitation, as officials stress that seeking support is a fundamental act of self-care.
