ILOILO CITY — The City Social Welfare and Development Office has mobilized an extensive stockpile of emergency supplies and activated its full disaster response machinery as Super Typhoon Inday threatens to dump heavy monsoon rains across the region. The preparations underscore a community‑first approach to safeguarding every Ilonggo family.

Stockpiles Ready for Immediate Deployment

Warehouses are now brimming with 2,000 family food packs, 1,799 additional food boxes from the DSWD, and over 20,000 kilograms of bulk rice. Canned goods, distilled water, hygiene kits, and modular tents have been pre‑positioned for rapid distribution. The inventory reflects weeks of quiet logistics work aimed at ensuring no evacuee goes hungry.

Beyond food, the city has prepared shelter materials, sleeping foams, and folding beds to make evacuation centers as comfortable as possible. The goal is to provide not just a roof but a dignified temporary home. These supplies can be dispatched within hours once the order is given.

Evacuation and Camp Management in Place

Seven district camp management teams have been assigned to designated evacuation centers across Iloilo City, ready to receive displaced residents. Over 200 community kitchens stand prepared to serve hot meals, turning school gymnasiums and covered courts into functional relief hubs. The Emergency Operations Center has been pre‑activated to coordinate the entire effort.

The city’s proactive stance ensures that if pre‑emptive evacuations become necessary, the transition will be orderly and swift. Families will be guided to safe shelters, where basic needs are met from the first moment of arrival. This level of readiness is built on years of learning from past typhoons.

Mental Health Support Mobilized

Recognizing that disasters wound the spirit as well as the body, the city has deployed 29 registered social workers and 60 child development workers to evacuation centers. They will provide immediate mental health and psychosocial support, particularly to children and the elderly. The presence of trained counselors offers comfort amid the chaos of displacement.

These teams are trained to spot signs of trauma and to create safe spaces where residents can process fear and loss. Simple acts like storytelling for children or a quiet conversation with a distressed parent can make a profound difference. The city treats emotional care as essential as food and water.

A Community Standing Together

Mayor Raisa Treñas has emphasized that the city’s strength lies in its people pulling together before, during, and after the storm. The preparations are not just a government exercise; they are a collective act of neighborliness and care. Iloilo City’s response to Typhoon Inday is a testament to a community that refuses to leave anyone behind.
