ILOILO CITY — Global shipping giant Maersk has launched its PH6 service at the Visayas Container Terminal (VCT), creating the first direct maritime link between Iloilo and the major trade hubs of Yantian in Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The inaugural call of the Maersk Bahamas marks a transformative moment for Western Visayas businesses.
A New Trade Corridor Opens
The PH6 service plugs Panay and the broader Western Visayas region directly into the heart of global commerce. Instead of transshipping through Manila or Cebu, local exporters can now ship goods straight to southern China and Hong Kong. This direct connection dramatically shortens delivery times and simplifies the supply chain.
Every Tuesday, a Maersk vessel will dock at the Iloilo terminal, linking the province to a fixed regional rotation. The full loop runs from Yantian to Hong Kong, Batangas, Tagoloan, Cebu, Iloilo, and back to Yantian. Businesses across multiple islands now share a predictable weekly schedule.
A Terminal Primed for Bigger Cargo
The Visayas Container Terminal, operated by International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), has prepared for this milestone with significant modernization. The company invested in two new mobile harbor cranes, each capable of reaching 46 meters and lifting 100 tons. These are the first such machines on Panay Island.
VCT Chief Executive Officer John Largo said the new service reflects growing trust in the terminal’s ability to handle foreign container vessels with precision. The upgrades allow the port to accommodate larger ships and move containers faster. Efficiency gains at the terminal mean fewer delays for perishable and time‑sensitive products.
Direct Benefits for Agriculture and Fisheries
Western Visayas is known for its rich agricultural lands and productive fishing grounds. Exporters of fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and processed food now gain a competitive advantage through reduced transit times. Shorter shipping durations help preserve product quality and reduce spoilage.
Lower logistics costs are another immediate benefit. Cutting out intermediary ports trims freight expenses, allowing local producers to price their goods more attractively in international markets.
