ILOILO — Thirty Persons Deprived of Liberty at the BJMP Pototan Male Dormitory are now equipped with the skills to cultivate coffee, a crop that symbolizes hope and renewal. On May 28, 2026, the Iloilo Provincial Agriculture Office conducted a Coffee Farming Orientation under the PDL RESTART program. The initiative aligns with the province's vision of a "Fun, Foodie, Friendly Iloilo" by extending livelihood opportunities to all sectors, including those behind bars.
The orientation was facilitated by PAGRO's Jepty Cabanilla and Nerio Lustria. The program, which stands for Rehabilitation, Empowerment, Social Transformation and Reintegration Track, aims to equip participants with practical agricultural knowledge. This knowledge will support their transition into becoming productive community members upon reintegration. The province is investing in people, ensuring no one is left behind.
Brewing Skills for a New Beginning
The orientation covered the complete cycle of coffee production. Participants learned about nursery establishment and maintenance to develop quality seedlings. They also studied plantation management, learning sustainable practices for productive farming. The training included coffee propagation techniques for effective plant reproduction.
Post-harvest handling was another key focus. The PDLs were taught proper harvesting, processing, and storage methods to maintain bean quality and market value. This comprehensive approach ensures they possess a holistic skill set. By mastering these technical aspects, the participants are being prepared for meaningful work in Iloilo's growing coffee industry, a sector with significant potential for economic growth and cultural pride.
A Province That Empowers Through Agriculture
Beyond individual empowerment, the activity advances the province's broader coffee industry. It promotes rehabilitation, self-reliance, and sustainable livelihoods for PDLs and their families. The initiative demonstrates that meaningful agricultural interventions can foster hope and build a brighter future. The provincial government reaffirms its commitment to inclusive development through such programs.
By investing in the skills of PDLs, Iloilo is transforming lives and strengthening its communities. The PDL RESTART program is a testament to the belief that everyone deserves a second chance. For these 30 individuals, learning to grow coffee is more than just a skill; it is a pathway to a future filled with purpose, dignity, and the rich aroma of possibility.
