The Gervasio Pañgilinan Historical House in Cavite City marked its 105th anniversary on July 5, 2026. Originally built on July 5, 1921, this renowned heritage house was the residence of Don Gervasio Enriquez Pañgilinan, a celebrated revolutionary, pharmacist, former Municipal President of Cavite, and one of the city's earliest notable historians. The City Government of Cavite, alongside the Cavite City Tourism Office and the Cavite Historical Society, commemorated the milestone with a special community program and a rare public open-house viewing.
The Man Behind the House: A Revolutionary, Pharmacist, and Historian
Don Gervasio Enriquez Pangilinan was born on June 19, 1876, in the barrio of Rosario, San Roque, Cavite, the only son among five children of Doroteo Pangilinan and Nicolasa Enriquez . He pursued pharmacy at the University of Santo Tomas, graduating in November 1896 . During the Philippine Revolution, he joined the revolutionary medical corps and was promoted to First Lieutenant of Sanidad by General Mariano Trias, fighting in numerous battles during the Philippine-American War between 1898 and 1900 .
After the war, Pangilinan became a prominent pharmacist in Manila, Pampanga, Laguna, and Olongapo before establishing his own pharmacy, Farmacia Pangilinan, in July 1918 . His pharmacy became a gathering place for Cavite's prominent figures, including Ladislao Diwa and Julian Felipe . In politics, he served as councilor (1911), vice mayor (1912), and Municipal President of Cavite from 1919 to 1922, also serving as president of the League of Municipal Presidents . His most enduring legacy is "La Historica de Cavite," the first comprehensive history book of Cavite, which he authored in 1926 . He passed away on May 13, 1945, at age 69.
A House Steeped in History and Community Pride
The Pangilinan House, built in 1921, stands as a testament to early 20th-century Filipino-Spanish architecture with its classic wooden balconies and antique fixtures . It was inside this home that Pangilinan composed most of his monumental manuscript, widely recognized by historians as the first comprehensive book detailing the history of Cavite . In 2021, his centennial year, the house was symbolically declared a heritage house by his descendants . The house's significance was formally recognized by the Cavite Studies Center, which conferred upon him the title of "Historiador at Rebolusyonaryo" (Historian and Revolutionary) in 2001 . The property also safeguards artifacts from multiple defining eras, including the 1872 Cavite Mutiny, the Philippine Revolution against Spain, and localized resistance during World War II.
The 105th-anniversary milestone, commemorated on July 5, 2026, served as a call to action for local authorities and the youth to actively preserve ancestral heritage sites as foundational pillars of Cavite's cultural identity. The open-house viewing offered the public a rare opportunity to explore the Katipunan Legacy Room, which showcases original regiment flags, strategic planning maps, and artifacts from the revolution. By preserving this ancestral home, Cavite City ensures that future generations will continue to draw inspiration from the life and legacy of Don Gervasio Pangilinan—a true Caviteño hero, historian, and public servant.
