The Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando came alive on June 10 as 19 cities and municipalities officially kicked off the Governor's Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament, showcasing the province's deep passion for sports and community unity.
A Grand Opening at the Heart of Pampanga Sports
The Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center, home to the Pampanga Giant Lanterns and a venue that has hosted PBA out-of-town games and MPBL finals , served as the perfect stage for this year's tournament opener. The venue, named after former governor Bren Guiao who oversaw its construction, has become a symbol of Pampanga's commitment to sports development . Teams from Angeles City, City of San Fernando, Mabalacat City, and 16 municipalities—Apalit, Arayat, Bacolor, Floridablanca, Guagua, Lubao, Macabebe, Magalang, Mexico, Minalin, Porac, San Simon, Santa Ana, Santa Rita, Santo Tomas, and Sasmuan—paraded their athletes in a festive display of provincial unity . The opening ceremony also featured a muse competition, with Santa Rita claiming the Best Muse title, followed by Mexico and the City of San Fernando.
Strong Support from Provincial Leaders and Sports Patrons
Governor Lilia "Nanay" Pineda, Vice Governor Dennis "Delta" Pineda, and members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan were present to show their full backing for the tournament . Each participating team received ₱100,000 in financial assistance from the provincial government to support their campaign . The competition received an additional boost from business leader Manny Pangilinan, who provided a ₱1-million sponsorship—reaffirming his longstanding commitment to Philippine sports development . Pangilinan's MVP Group has been a major supporter of national and grassroots sports initiatives, including the successful hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2023 and the upcoming FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship in 2025.
A Platform for Athletes and Scholarships
Vice Governor Pineda emphasized that the Governor's Cup serves as more than just a competition—it is a platform to discover promising basketball players and help them pursue opportunities in higher education through athletic scholarships and varsity programs . The tournament aims to give young Kapampangan athletes a positive avenue for personal and physical growth while fostering camaraderie among participating municipalities. This vision aligns with Pampanga's rich basketball heritage, which produced Fortunato Yambao, the first Kapampangan Olympian who represented the Philippines in the 1936 Berlin Olympics . As the competition unfolds over the coming weeks, teams will vie not only for the championship title but also for the opportunity to represent the best of Pampanga basketball.
