MAKATI CITY — The most meaningful messages from government are not always found in policy documents; sometimes, they arrive wrapped in ribbon and frosting and delivered straight to a resident’s doorstep. In Makati, this philosophy has taken shape through programs that place dignity, recognition, and active inclusion at the center of elderly care. As the city marks its 356th anniversary, its success story is reflected not only in its skyline and economic achievements but also in the thoughtful initiatives that continue to uplift the lives of senior citizens. Since July 2025, 36,590 senior citizens have received birthday cakes delivered directly to their homes. More than a simple gift, the annual tradition serves as a personal reminder that the city values and remembers the contributions of its elderly residents. As highlighted in a recent report on the city’s accomplishments, “Sometimes the most powerful thing a government can do is knock on a door and say, ‘We remember you.’”
A Legacy of Care and Compassion
Makati’s support for its senior citizens goes well beyond birthday celebrations. Through the Makati Senior Citizens Assistance and Inclusion Program, the city has established a comprehensive system that provides financial assistance, promotes food security, and creates employment opportunities for older residents. To encourage greater participation from the private sector, the city offers tax incentives to businesses that hire senior citizens, recognizing the skills, knowledge, and experience they continue to contribute to the workforce. Supporting these efforts is the revitalized Day Center for Senior Citizens in Barangay Poblacion, where elderly residents can enjoy free daily services such as haircuts, massages, and grooming. For seniors who may have difficulty traveling, the city’s Mobile Salon Program extends these wellness services directly to all 23 barangays, ensuring that accessibility remains a priority and that no elderly resident is left behind.
Honoring a Century of Life
The city also pays special tribute to residents who reach the extraordinary milestone of 100 years. Since July 2025, 11 centenarians have been recognized through Makati’s Centenarian Program, which honors these remarkable individuals as treasured members of the community. Eligible centenarians receive a P100,000 cash gift, a birthday cake, and a plaque of appreciation. Among those recently honored was Lola Ramona S. Uy, the city’s 142nd recognized centenarian, who received a personal visit from city officials bearing the cash gift, flowers, and a certificate of recognition. These intimate home visits highlight the city’s deep respect and appreciation for its elderly population. The success of the program has even inspired other local government units to adopt similar initiatives, helping cultivate a broader culture of care and recognition for senior citizens across the country.
More Than Just a Gift
At its core, Makati’s approach to elderly care is holistic and people-centered. The city recognizes that quality of life during one’s golden years depends not only on financial support but also on wellness, social engagement, and a sense of belonging. From wellness services offered through the Day Center and Mobile Salon Program to ensuring that every senior citizen’s birthday is acknowledged, Makati continues to strengthen a support system designed to benefit every elderly resident. While the city is often recognized for its economic accomplishments, including rising business tax collections and innovative sustainability initiatives, its most meaningful achievement may be the way it cares for its most vulnerable citizens. The simple act of delivering a birthday cake represents far more than a celebration. It is a heartfelt reminder that in Makati, every resident matters, every contribution is valued, and every stage of life is worthy of recognition.
