MAKATI CITY — The Makati Health Department (MHD), together with the Department of Health – Philippine National AIDS Council, recently observed the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial 2026 under the theme, “Light the Legacy. Remember. Advance. Act. Keeping the Light Alive.”
The activity served as a solemn remembrance for individuals who lost their lives to HIV/AIDS while also strengthening ongoing efforts to combat stigma, discrimination, and misinformation surrounding the disease. Organizers likewise highlighted the continued importance of awareness campaigns, prevention programs, and improved access to HIV testing and treatment services as part of Makati’s public health initiatives.
Remembering Lives Lost and Renewing Commitment
Held during a May evening gathering in Makati, the commemoration brought together city officials, healthcare workers, and advocates in a shared tribute to those affected by HIV/AIDS and in support of the continuing fight against the disease.
Among those present at the event were Councilors Arlene Ortega and Tristan Pangilinan, OIC-Makati Health Department head Dr. Bernard Sese, Division Head for Public Health Dr. Jane Tan-Rivero, along with health personnel and HIV/AIDS advocates. Their participation reflected the city government’s ongoing commitment to addressing HIV/AIDS and supporting communities affected by the illness.
Promoting Awareness and Inclusive Healthcare
City officials emphasized that the memorial also reflects Makati’s broader commitment to promoting inclusive healthcare, strengthening public awareness, and supporting programs focused on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.
Beyond honoring the memory of those who passed away, the activity reinforced the importance of continued education, early testing, accessible healthcare services, and community support to help prevent future infections and improve the quality of life for people living with HIV.
