Bohol — The provincial government of Bohol is making bold moves to elevate its iconic "Ubi Kinampay" to the global stage. In a strategic meeting held on July 4, 2026, Governor Erico Aris Aumentado and representatives from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) discussed a comprehensive five-year research program designed to strengthen the province’s purple yam value chain. This initiative is aimed at bolstering local production while ensuring that Bohol’s farmers are equipped to meet the growing international demand for this heritage crop. By securing international expertise and potential funding, the province is positioning its agricultural sector as a cornerstone of its long-term economic development.

Investing in Agricultural Heritage

Ubi Kinampay has long been a symbol of Boholano pride, and this new initiative seeks to transform it from a local staple into a high-value export product. The proposed research program focuses on improving farming techniques, post-harvest processing, and market accessibility, which are crucial for maintaining the crop’s superior quality. Governor Aumentado emphasized the need to avoid stagnation, stating that strengthening the value chain is essential for ensuring that farmers reap the benefits of the global market’s rising interest in authentic, high-quality agricultural products. This commitment to modernization shows how the province is leveraging its traditional strengths to drive future growth.

Tapping into International Support

The collaboration with the USDA is a significant breakthrough for Bohol, as the province is currently being considered as a potential beneficiary of a $15 million grant earmarked for the Philippines. This assistance is intended to promote and improve local value chains, providing a massive boost to the province's existing agricultural frameworks. By aligning with international standards and research practices, Bohol is not only enhancing its crop quality but also building a network of global partnerships. This proactive approach to securing international aid underscores the government's dedication to providing tangible support for the local farming community.

Building Long-Term Economic Resilience

This five-year roadmap is about more than just boosting production; it is about creating a sustainable livelihood for thousands of Boholano farmers. By establishing a robust research-backed industry, the province aims to create a stable economic engine that can withstand market fluctuations and environmental challenges. The integration of modern technology and expert guidance ensures that the Ubi industry remains competitive and relevant in an evolving global trade landscape. As the province moves forward, this project will serve as a model for how heritage crops can be developed into sustainable pillars of regional prosperity.
