The City Government of Taguig has strengthened its animal welfare efforts by training police officers and firefighters in animal rescue, humane handling, and basic life support for pets during emergencies and disasters. The training was conducted by the Office of the City Veterinarian (OCV) and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) on October 12, 2026, at the Lakeshore Activity Center along Laguna Lake Highway in Barangay Lower Bicutan, as part of Animal Welfare Week.

Preparing First Responders for Animal Emergencies

Personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) participated in the training, learning how to rescue, catch, and handle animals safely and humanely. The sessions also covered basic life support for pets, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), alongside hands-on demonstrations and a question-and-answer session to help responders apply the proper techniques during emergencies.

Strengthening Animal Welfare During Disasters

OCV Head Dr. Alexis B. Siblag emphasized the importance of preparing emergency responders to protect animals during disasters and other critical situations. The initiative aims to improve coordination between the city’s veterinary and disaster response teams.

Taguig City Fire Marshal F/Supt. Garynel Julian also highlighted the importance of including animals in emergency response operations, stressing that pets and other animals may need assistance during emergencies just like people do.

Building a More Animal-Friendly Taguig

Veterinarians Dr. Katleen Sagun of the Rembo Satellite Office and Dr. Kim Ashley Dela Cruz of the OCV Main Office in New Lower Bicutan facilitated the training. Through initiatives like this, Taguig continues to promote responsible animal care and strengthen the readiness of its emergency personnel. The training helps ensure that responders are better equipped to assist animals when disasters and other emergencies occur.
