Bohol — The province of Bohol is in full swing with preparations for its much-anticipated annual celebration, "Sandugo sa Bohol 2026." This month-long festival commemorates the historic 1565 blood compact—or sandugo (meaning "one blood")—between Spanish explorer Miguel López de Legazpi and the Boholano chieftain Datu Sikatuna, marking the first international treaty of friendship on Philippine soil.

A Grand Celebration of Heritage

The festival serves as a vibrant showcase of Boholano culture, history, and community spirit. This year’s festivities are anchored by the highly anticipated Street Dancing and Grand Showdown competition, scheduled for July 26 at the CPG Complex in Tagbilaran City. Nine municipalities—Alburquerque, Loay, Maribojoc, Antequera, Valencia, Dimiao, Ubay, Catigbian, and Talibon—are set to compete for the prestigious "Festival of Festivals" championship. To support the participating local government units (LGUs), the provincial government, under the leadership of Governor Aris Aumentado, has allocated a subsidy of P1 million for each competing municipality.

Logistics and Community Coordination

Ensuring the success of such a massive event requires meticulous planning. The Center for Culture and Arts Development (CCAD), led by Emerson Pinos, has been coordinating with national and provincial agencies, the Tagbilaran City government, and various stakeholders to manage operational details. Key discussions have focused on safety and security protocols, traffic and road closure plans, venue arrangements, and the order of performances to ensure a seamless experience for both locals and tourists. These efforts reflect the province’s commitment to fostering camaraderie among its municipalities while highlighting Bohol's diverse traditions.

An Island-Wide Cultural Showcase

Beyond the grand showdown, the month of July is filled with various activities that celebrate Bohol's identity. From traditional arts and crafts showcases to religious commemorations and community fairs, the festival offers an authentic experience for visitors. The celebration not only honors a significant historical milestone but also serves as a platform for Bohol to demonstrate its resilience and pride. As the festival reaches its peak, the province invites everyone to witness the energetic performances and participate in the cultural festivities that make the Sandugo Festival a crown jewel of the Visayas region.
