BOHOL — The Municipality of Cortes emerged as one of the big winners at the Sandugo Agri Fair 2026, bringing home three awards that celebrate the best of Bohol’s native delicacies and indigenous crops. The five‑day event concluded on July 17 at Plaza Rizal, drawing 52 exhibitors and thousands of fairgoers.
A Showcase of Bohol’s Agricultural Pride
The fair, organized by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, carried the theme “Panguma ug Pangisda Magpadayon, Bisan Pa sa Hagit sa Krisis ug Panahon.” It gathered 30 local government units, 17 private exhibitors, and five national agencies under one roof. Each booth displayed fresh produce, processed foods, and farming innovations that reflect the province’s deep agricultural roots.
Governor Erico Aristotle C. Aumentado led the opening ceremony, underscoring the vital role of farmers and fisherfolk in feeding the island’s 1.4 million residents and its growing number of tourists. Provincial Agriculturist Liza M. Quirog noted that the event was designed to connect producers directly with consumers, creating immediate income opportunities. The fair also hosted traditional skill demonstrations, including coconut grating, rice pounding, and hanging‑rice weaving.
Cortes Brings Home the Gold
Cortes claimed first prize in the Best Puto Balanghoy category, thanks to the culinary skills of Ms. Adolfa Abanco. The cassava cake impressed judges with its authentic taste and texture, a time‑honored recipe that represents the town’s culinary heritage. The victory spotlights Cortes as a destination for native delicacies that appeal to both locals and tourists.
Two more awards followed in the indigenous rootcrop competition. Ms. Virginia Boctoto secured second place in the PAW category, while Mr. Rene Perez earned second place in the KOT category. Both entries demonstrated the superior quality of rootcrops grown in Cortes soil, validating the municipality’s agricultural practices. The local government expressed gratitude to its farmers and food artisans for their dedication.
Linking Agriculture and Tourism
Events like the Sandugo Agri Fair do more than recognize farming excellence; they build bridges between the countryside and the tourism economy. Restaurants, hotels, and souvenir shops source ingredients and products discovered at the fair, creating a sustainable supply chain. The Municipality of Valencia also earned top honors, winning Best LGU Booth and Product Display for its creative presentation of local goods.
