Sports Tourism Creates New Opportunities for Bohol

BOHOL - Bohol highlighted sports tourism as an important driver of visitor activity and local economic development during the 2026 State of the Province Address held at the Bohol Cultural Center on October 9. Featured events included the Sun Life 5150 Triathlon Bohol, Sandugo sa Bohol Pickleball, and Bohol International Marathon. These sporting events attract athletes, supporters, and visitors who contribute to demand for accommodation, dining, transportation, and other tourism-related services. The province’s hosting of major sporting competitions also strengthens its reputation as a destination for active travel while providing opportunities for local businesses and communities to participate in tourism growth. By integrating sports with its natural attractions, Bohol can broaden its tourism offerings and encourage visitors to explore more of the island.

Industry Partnerships Generate Tourism Sales and Business Opportunities

The province also highlighted the economic contributions of tourism expos and partnerships with industry stakeholders. According to the presentation, the Sandugo Tourism and Travel Expo generated approximately PHP6 million in sales, while the Philippine Travel Mart contributed around PHP14 million. These events provide platforms for tourism businesses, destination representatives, accommodation providers, and travel operators to promote their products and connect with prospective customers and partners. The figures demonstrate how coordinated tourism promotion can help generate commercial opportunities beyond visitor arrivals alone. Stronger collaboration among government agencies, private enterprises, and local communities can also help distribute tourism benefits to transport workers, food producers, artisans, and micro, small, and medium enterprises across the province.

Inclusive Hospitality and Geopark Protection Support Sustainable Growth

Bohol’s tourism accomplishments also include efforts to make hospitality more inclusive while protecting the natural and cultural resources that distinguish the island. The infographic featured Marea Al Fresco Dining at The Bellevue Resort as Bohol’s first halal-certified restaurant and noted the resort’s recognition by the Department of Tourism as a Muslim-friendly accommodation. These developments can help make the destination more welcoming to Muslim travelers and visitors with different cultural and dietary needs. At the same time, the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark remains central to the province’s sustainable tourism direction, linking destination development with environmental conservation and community livelihoods. Initiatives involving responsible sports events, visitor management, and climate adaptation planning for important natural attractions reinforce the importance of protecting the island’s resources as tourism expands. Through inclusive services, stronger industry partnerships, and responsible destination management, Bohol aims to build a tourism sector that supports both economic opportunities and long-term environmental stewardship.
