BUTUAN CITY — The centuries-old tradition of the Abayan Festival came alive once again on July 26, 2026, as thousands of residents and visitors gathered along the Agusan River to honor Sta. Ana. The event featured a vibrant procession, a River Float Competition, and the Saugan Hong Indigay, showcasing the cultural richness of 19 riverside barangays. The celebration began with cultural presentations from students of Agusan National High School, Butuan City School of Arts and Trades, and Libertad National High School, setting the tone for a day of faith, unity, and heritage.

A Tradition Rooted in History and Community

The Abayan Festival traces its origins to an ancient ritual performed by early settlers along the Agusan River, who sought protection from crocodiles and evil spirits. Over time, it evolved into a tradition of thanksgiving and devotion to Sta. Ana. The phrase "mag abayan kita" reflects the spirit of cooperation and unity that defines this unique Butuanon celebration. The festival is a testament to the community's resilience and its deep connection to the river that has sustained generations.

A Cultural Treasure of Caraga

The Department of Tourism Caraga has recognized the Abayan Festival as one of the cultural treasures of the region. The agency commended the City Government of Butuan and the Butuan City Tourism and Cultural Affairs Department for their continued efforts to preserve and promote this tradition. The festival not only strengthens the cultural identity of Butuan but also attracts visitors, contributing to the city's tourism and economic growth. As the Abayan Festival continues to thrive, it remains a powerful symbol of Butuan's rich heritage and community spirit.
