DAVAO — The Department of Tourism Davao Region celebrated the conclusion of its Davao Adventure Challenge Season 2 on September 17, 2026, at the ASEAN Innovation Summit in SMX Convention Center. The awarding honored 21 Ultimate Conquerors and over a hundred participants who earned at least 150 points across 30 adventure sites.

A Season of Exploration and Discovery

What began as an invitation to explore Davao grew into a region-wide movement involving 2,542 registered challengers and 2,161 accepted challenges. Participants climbed mountains, explored caves and waterfalls, navigated rivers and open waters, and discovered experiences beyond the usual tourist destinations.

The numbers reflect a growing appetite for adventure tourism in the region. More Filipinos are seeking active, experience-driven travel that takes them off the beaten path. Davao's diverse landscapes—from highland peaks to coastal wonders—provide the perfect playground for this emerging market.

The Return of the Boulder Face Challenge

The most grueling multi-sport race in Asia is making its comeback as the Mount Apo Boulder Face Challenge returns. Participants from across the globe navigate 118 kilometers of mountain biking, trekking, and water tubing before culminating in a perilous ascent across the mountain's boulder face.

Tourism officials in Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur, confirmed that athletes are arriving to test their grit against sulfuric vents and ancient limestone formations. The event drives the local service economy, generating millions in tourism receipts and supporting businesses that depend on visitor traffic.

Highland Sanctuaries Above the City Heat

For those seeking a gentler connection with the mountain, the "April in the Highlands" campaign offers refreshing respite at nearby resorts. Temperatures drop as low as 19 degrees Celsius, providing relief from the sizzling city center. Montefrio Garden Resort recently unveiled a cable car attraction with panoramic views of Mount Apo's green ridges.

This development caters to the experience economy, where visitors enjoy high-altitude ATV rides and luxury garden dining without the physical demand of a full summit trek. By diversifying the ways tourists interact with the mountain, Davao lengthens visitor stays and broadens its appeal to families and workcation professionals.

Preserving the Sacred and the Green

Despite the influx of visitors, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources maintains a strict Leave No Trace policy to protect the delicate biodiversity of the UNESCO Global Geopark. Authorities conduct rigorous monitoring of all trails to ensure the mountain's sacred spirit is respected by climbers and resort operators alike.

This oversight includes a review of structures within the protected natural park to prevent destruction of relict forest zones that house the Philippine Eagle. The commitment to sustainable adventure ensures Mount Apo remains a resilient and values-driven destination for generations of explorers.

The Adventure Continues

With Season 2 concluded, anticipation builds for what comes next. The Department of Tourism Davao Region has hinted at future challenges, promising that the adventure continues. The foundation laid by two successful seasons positions Davao as a premier adventure tourism hub in the Philippines.

From the heights of Mount Apo to the depths of its caves and rivers, Davao Region offers endless opportunities for discovery. Each challenge completed, each summit reached, and each community visited contributes to a growing legacy of exploration and sustainable tourism.
