MAKATI CITY — Art lovers exploring Makati’s cultural scene can discover the creative journey of artist Joey De Castro through “Coming to Life,” a solo exhibition at the Yuchengco Museum that brings his photography and ceramic works together in one presentation. From mixing clay and preparing glazes to overseeing kiln firings that can take between eight and 24 hours, his practice is deeply rooted in patience and hands-on craftsmanship. In “Coming to Life,” photographic works are presented alongside his ceramic pieces, allowing visitors to see the connections between the two mediums. A Practice Built on Craft and Community
De Castro’s contribution to Philippine ceramics extends beyond his personal artistic practice. Since 2009, he has been teaching at the UP College of Fine Arts and has played a role in bringing together the local community of contemporary stoneware potters. He established Sierra Madre Pottery Studio in 2011 and later founded Sierra Madre Gallery, described as the first pottery-focused gallery in Manila dedicated exclusively to Filipino ceramic art. His work in education and community-building reflects his effort to make pottery more accessible and familiar to Filipino audiences while helping distinguish artistic practice from craftsmanship alone.
