A Street Becomes Part of the Celebration

BACOLOD - The colorful mural brings another layer of excitement to MassKara, where streets already become stages for performances, parades, food, and community gatherings. Its three-dimensional design gives the artwork a playful quality that invites people to interact with it through photographs and different viewing angles. Positioned at a public plaza, the mural also places art directly in a space where residents and visitors can experience it during the festival. Instead of simply passing through the area, festivalgoers now have another reason to pause, explore, and capture a little piece of MassKara.

Creativity Grows Through Collaboration

The project also shows what can happen when students, professionals, organizations, and businesses work together. Contributions from the United Architects of the Philippines Bacolod Chapter and La Consolacion College-Bacolod’s School of Architecture, Fine Arts and Interior Design helped bring the concept from an idea into a finished street artwork. For students, projects like this provide an opportunity to use creative and technical skills outside the classroom while contributing to the community. The involvement of Davies Paints as the Official MassKara Festival Partner also helped turn the city into a brighter canvas for the celebration.

Another Reason to Stop and Smile

Beyond its colorful appearance, the mural reflects the spirit behind this year’s MassKara theme, “Share the Smile. Celebrate Gugma (Love).” It demonstrates how public art can bring people together while giving local creative talents a place to be seen. The project also forms part of World Architecture Day 2026, whose global theme is “Housing is a Human Right. Build It,” connecting the celebration to broader conversations about design and the built environment. This MassKara season, Bacolod has added something unexpected to its streets: an artwork that does not simply decorate the city—it invites people to become part of the picture. So if you find yourself walking along Araneta Street, slow down, look twice, and get ready for a photo-worthy surprise.
