CEBU — High above the coastline along the winding Transcentral Highway, Buwakan ni Alejandra has blossomed into one of Cebu's most enchanting highland destinations. For travelers seeking a refreshing escape from the tropical heat, this terraced mountain garden offers a breathtaking visual masterpiece through December 2026.
A Living Tribute in Full Bloom
The garden's name tells a story of family love and remembrance. "Buwakan" means place of flowers in Cebuano, while "Alejandra" honors the late Alejandra Bacos, a matriarch known for her passion for flora. Her son-in-law, Eleuterio Gentapa, transformed an idle hillside into a living monument to her memory. Opened to the public in May 2017, what began as a family tribute quickly blossomed into a cherished eco-tourism destination.
Spanning over 700 square meters, the garden showcases more than 200 species of local and exotic flowering plants. Visitors marvel at vibrant dahlias, wax begonias, roses, hibiscus, and angel's trumpets scattered across the terraced landscape. Elevated steel boardwalks allow guests to stroll above the floral canopy without damaging delicate roots, revealing a new palette of colors at every turn against the dramatic mountain backdrop.
The Reign of the Spider Flowers
From October through late November 2026, visitors are in for a legendary treat. The garden's famous Spider Flower Field reaches its peak bloom during this period, presenting an ethereal sea of pink, white, and purple blooms waving gracefully against the backdrop of rolling green mountains. The signature field of tall blooms resembles glowing birthday candles, making it a favorite photo spot for landscape photographers and content creators.
The crisp highland air and occasional morning mists create a fairytale atmosphere that is perfect for solo adventures and cinematic videoshoots. As the garden sits hundreds of meters above sea level, the cool climate offers a welcome respite from the tropical heat below. Morning visits are ideal for softer light and fewer people, while late afternoons offer cooler weather and golden-hour photos.
Festive Blooms for December
As December arrives, bringing the festive holiday season to the Philippines, the garden transitions gracefully. To ensure the destination remains vibrant during the peak holiday travel season, the staff has prepared an entirely new batch of seasonal flowers to keep the garden colorful through the end of the year.
Expect cooler temperatures reminiscent of a mild autumn morning, making it a cozy destination for couples celebrating anniversaries or families spending the holidays together. December is prime time for pre-nuptial photoshoots, engagement proposals, and holiday family reunions amidst a sea of fresh petals.
Planning Your Highland Visit
The garden is open daily from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, though hours may occasionally adjust based on weather conditions for plant protection. Entrance fees are budget-friendly, with rates for adults, children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. It is always best to inquire upon arrival since fees may occasionally be updated.
Getting there is part of the adventure. From Cebu City, drive along the scenic Transcentral Highway toward Balamban, a journey of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic. The mountain drive itself offers several viewpoints along the way. Alternatively, ride a V-hire from Ayala Center Cebu bound for Balamban and ask the driver to drop you at the garden.
