Cebu — The city is preparing to take center stage in the world of international basketball after being officially named the host of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2027. This landmark event marks a significant milestone in Philippine sports history, as it is the first time the country will host the continent’s premier women’s basketball championship. The tournament is scheduled to take place from July 10 to July 18, 2027, and will be held at the newly inaugurated, state-of-the-art SM Seaside Arena in Cebu City.
A Continental Showpiece at the Queen City of the South
The choice of Cebu City for this prestigious event reflects a strategic move to bring major international competitions beyond Metro Manila. The tournament will feature eight elite national teams, including defending champions Australia, along with powerhouse nations such as China, Japan, New Zealand, and Lebanon. The competition is highly anticipated, not only for the caliber of basketball on display but also because it serves as a crucial qualifier pathway for the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics. With a 16,000-seat capacity, the SM Seaside Arena is set to provide a world-class environment for fans to witness the intense rivalries and high-level athleticism that define the Women’s Asia Cup.
Branding and Cultural Heritage
During the official brand and logo launch held on July 8, 2026, officials showcased an identity that celebrates both the sport and the host city. The tournament logo is a vibrant fusion of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup trophy aesthetic combined with Cebu’s distinct cultural markers, including its official colors, city seal, and intricate traditional Filipino weaving patterns. FIBA Asia Board Member Al Panlilio emphasized that this tournament offers a unique opportunity for the Philippines to showcase the rich, welcoming culture of Cebu to international athletes, officials, and basketball enthusiasts from across the globe.
A Platform for Gilas Women’s Growth
For the Gilas Pilipinas Women, hosting the tournament on home soil represents a pivotal moment for the national program. Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Executive Director Erika Dy noted that having the competition in the Philippines allows the team to showcase the significant progress they have made in recent years. Competing against Asia's elite teams at home provides a powerful platform for the players to inspire the next generation of Filipina basketball talent. As the country prepares for this grand stage, the hosting of the 2027 Women’s Asia Cup reinforces the Philippines' commitment to elevating the standard of women's basketball and fostering its growth throughout the region.
