CEBU CITY — The Cebu City Government opened the Pueblo Amante de Maria: The Cebuano Love and Devotion to Mary Exhibition on October 12, 2026, at Sinulog Hall of the Rizal Memorial Library and Museum Building. The showcase celebrates the enduring Marian devotion of Cebuanos.
A Celebration of Faith and Heritage
Curated by Iñaque Shaquille Wasawas Garlet, the exhibition honors the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom many Cebuanos lovingly call Inahan. It forms part of the observance of Museums and Galleries Month and the Month of the Holy Rosary.
The showcase highlights the deep connection between Cebu's cultural heritage and Catholic faith. Mary is venerated as a mother who listens, comforts, and intercedes for her children. The exhibition invites visitors to appreciate traditions passed down through generations.
Voices of Devotion and Reflection
CHAC Commissioner Fr. Erik T. Orio underscored Catholicism's role in shaping Cebu's history, traditions, arts, music, and religious practices. He cited longstanding devotions including the Virgen de los Remedios of Cota de San Pedro and the Virgen de la Regla of Opon.
Journalist Juniño Padilla highlighted compassion, unity, and responsible journalism. He called on the faithful to seek Mary's intercession amid national challenges while taking personal responsibility for reconciliation. Padilla encouraged media practitioners to uphold truth, fairness, and compassion.
Atty. Marlouize E. Villanueva shared how Marian devotion became part of her family life. She recalled bringing religious images from household to household in Sitio San Jose, Barangay Lahug, and praying the rosary with her family. This childhood tradition grew into a personal devotion guiding her through law school and legal practice.
Honoring Generations of Camareros
The exhibition recognizes the generosity of camareros and camareras who entrusted their sacred Marian images to the showcase. Among those acknowledged were Fr. Erik Orio, Hon. Alvin Agnes, Kevin Mahusay, the Rallos Family, Earl Bacalan, and Dr. Clodoveo Nacorda.
Others included Reynald and Debra Andales, Arjun Agsoy Gallarde, Yvar Montecillo, Joseph Morano, Ric Albert Salili, and the Archdiocesan Shrine of Nuestra Señora del Carmen. Ruel Santillian Manzanares, Wilky Bangayan, Emmanuel Rosal Nadela, Fr. Jesam Felicano, Barangay sa Birhen, Andoi Cane, and Nikko and Nikki Ricaplaza were also recognized.
Their contributions allow the public to appreciate religious traditions passed down through generations. The images serve as tangible links to Cebu's spiritual lineage, connecting present generations with ancestors who cherished the same devotions. Organizers expressed gratitude to media partner DotTv Nationwide for promoting the exhibition.
An Open Invitation to the Public
The Cebu City Government invites the public to visit the exhibition and discover the rich Marian traditions shaping Cebuano identity. The event offers a meaningful cultural experience for devotees, historians, artists, and curious travelers alike.
The Pueblo Amante de Maria exhibition is open until October 30, 2026, at Sinulog Hall, Rizal Memorial Library and Museum Building, Cebu.
