DUMAGUETE CITY — Art lovers and heritage enthusiasts have a compelling reason to visit the National Museum of the Philippines–Dumaguete this season. The museum is currently hosting "Katahum sa Negros," a special exhibition featuring the works of Melfred Briones alongside other local artists, celebrating the island's heritage, marine environments, and community spirit.
A Tribute to Negros Heritage
The exhibition showcases Briones' 2026 oil on canvas creations, including "Beneath the Waves of Apo," "Evening Glow at Pantawan," and "Leon Kilat." Each piece reflects the artist's deep connection to Negros Oriental's landscapes and cultural icons, inviting viewers to appreciate the province's natural beauty and historical narratives.
"Katahum sa Negros" serves as a collective tribute to the island's identity, bringing together visual artists who draw inspiration from local seascapes, mountains, and community life. A Museum Steeped in History
The exhibition is housed within the Old Presidencia Building, a 1937 structure designed by renowned Filipino architect Juan M. Arellano. The neoclassical edifice blends Spanish, American, and local architectural elements, earning recognition as an Important Cultural Property in 2019.
After a full restoration under a 50-year agreement with the city government, the museum opened to the public on November 25, 2022. It now stands as the 16th component branch of the National Museum network, dedicated to preserving the natural history, archaeology, and cultural heritage of Negros Oriental, Siquijor, and the broader Visayas.

Beyond the rotating art exhibits, the museum offers permanent galleries that enrich every visit. "Kabilin sa Kinaiyahan sa Negros" explores the region's geological features, including Mount Canlaon and Mount Talinis, alongside floral biodiversity and endemic wildlife. "Ang mga Lubong sa Banga" displays ancient burial jars and mortuary traditions from the Late Neolithic to the Metal Age.
"Karaang Edipisyo" features architectural models and historic landmarks throughout Negros Oriental and Siquijor, giving context to the region's built heritage. The Knowledge Nook provides a reading corner for those who wish to linger and learn more about local history and culture.
