DAVAO CITY — The Davao Region has emerged as the top performer in the country's labor market for July 2026, recording the highest labor force participation and employment rates nationwide. This remarkable achievement highlights the region's dynamic economy and the active engagement of its working-age population.

According to the latest preliminary data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, the region's labor force participation rate climbed to 67.9 percent, up from 61.0 percent a year prior. This surge indicates that roughly 2.72 million individuals out of the 4.00 million working-age population are actively contributing to or seeking participation in the economy.

A Thriving and Active Workforce

Davao Region's 67.9 percent participation rate surpasses the national average of 63.6 percent. It stands as the highest among all 18 regions, painting a picture of a highly motivated workforce eager to secure livelihood opportunities across various thriving industries in the south.

Out of this massive labor pool, approximately 2.61 million individuals are currently employed. This translates to a 96.1 percent employment rate, which is 2.1 percentage points higher than the national employment figure, cementing the region's reputation for robust and continuous job generation.

Lowest Unemployment Rate in the Nation

Despite a slight increase from previous quarters, Davao Region still posted the lowest unemployment rate in the country at 3.9 percent. This means only about 245,000 individuals are actively seeking work but remain without a job, well below the national average of 6.0 percent.

By comparison, the National Capital Region recorded the highest unemployment rate at 8.2 percent, followed by Bicol and Iloilo. Davao's ability to maintain such a low unemployment rate reflects the continued resilience of local businesses and industries in absorbing new entrants to the labor force.

Addressing Underemployment Challenges

While the headline employment figures are highly encouraging, challenges remain regarding job quality. The region's underemployment rate stood at 9.0 percent, representing approximately 235,000 employed individuals who are actively seeking additional work hours, a second job, or better opportunities.

This figure is notably lower than the national underemployment rate of 12.9 percent, indicating a relatively healthier job market in Davao. However, addressing the persistent demand for higher-paying or full-time roles remains a crucial objective for local policymakers moving forward.

A Promising Economic Outlook

The impressive labor statistics for July 2026 underscore Davao Region's status as a vital economic engine in the southern Philippines. A large and active workforce, combined with remarkably low unemployment, creates a fertile environment for sustained business growth, encouraging further local and foreign investment.

As the region continues to attract capital and develop its infrastructure, the labor market is expected to evolve further. Stakeholders remain highly optimistic that upcoming investments will not only create more jobs but also elevate the overall quality of employment available to Davaoeños.
