DAVAO CITY — A young Dabawenyo artist carried the region's colors to the national stage this October, showcasing both talent and a deep commitment to food security. Joshua Allen Cosare, a Grade 6 student from Buhangin Central Elementary School-SPED Center, proudly represented Davao Region at the 2026 World Food Day National On-the-Spot Poster Making Contest in Metro Manila.
A Young Talent Takes the National Stage
Cosare competed against young artists from across the Philippines, each armed with crayons, paint, and a vision for a better food future. The contest challenged participants to interpret the theme "Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow." through visual storytelling, transforming complex ideas about agriculture and sustainability into images that speak to every generation.
Accompanied by his teacher-coach, Alan Apple Cosare, the young artist demonstrated remarkable focus and creativity under pressure. His participation brought immense pride to Davao Region and highlighted the potential of young learners when given opportunities to shine. It also reinforced the value of mentorship in nurturing artistic talent.
A Platform for Awareness and Advocacy
The annual competition is organized by the Department of Agriculture in partnership with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. It encourages young artists to use their creativity to raise awareness of food security and sustainable agriculture. The event forms part of global World Food Day observances held every October 16.
Through art, children communicate urgent messages about hunger, nutrition, and environmental stewardship. Their fresh perspectives often resonate more powerfully than technical reports or policy briefs. The contest thus serves a dual purpose: celebrating youthful creativity while advancing a critical global conversation.
Davao's Commitment to Nurturing Young Talent
Joshua's achievement reflects the broader commitment of Davao's educational institutions to holistic development. Schools like Buhangin Central Elementary School-SPED Center provide platforms for students to explore their gifts beyond traditional academics. Teachers invest time and energy in coaching young competitors, ensuring they are prepared for regional and national stages.
For Davao Region, Joshua's participation is more than an individual accolade. It signals that local schools are producing confident, creative, and socially aware young citizens. These students will eventually become leaders, innovators, and advocates for the causes they care about today.
Art as a Tool for Social Change
Poster-making competitions like this one remind us that art is not merely decorative. It is a powerful medium for education, advocacy, and collective action. When a child draws a thriving farm or a family sharing a nutritious meal, that image carries hope and urgency in equal measure.
Joshua's poster, whatever its final imagery, contributes to a national mosaic of young voices calling for a food-secure future. His participation inspires classmates and aspiring artists in Davao to pursue their own creative paths. It also encourages parents and educators to support children's artistic interests alongside academic pursuits.
Looking Ahead
As World Food Day 2026 concludes, Joshua returns to Davao with valuable experience and memories. His journey from a local classroom to a national competition demonstrates what determination and support can achieve. The region celebrates his accomplishment and looks forward to witnessing his continued growth.
Congratulations are in order for Joshua Allen Cosare, his coach, and his school community. They have shown that Davao's youth are ready to contribute to national conversations through creativity and conviction. May his example inspire more young Dabawenyos to use their talents for meaningful causes.
