GENERAL LUNA, SIARGAO — The Department of Tourism (DOT) Caraga, in partnership with the British Embassy Manila, held a Multi-Agency Stakeholder Coordination Meeting on August 12, 2026, at Cabuntog Hall in General Luna as part of the British Embassy’s Consular Outreach Visit in Siargao. The meeting focused on enhancing referral systems and strengthening coordination among agencies in addressing the needs of British nationals and other foreign visitors, particularly in cases involving medical emergencies, welfare concerns, accidents, legal assistance, and other consular matters. The initiative highlights the shared commitment of participating agencies to keeping Siargao a safe, secure, and welcoming destination for visitors.

A Unified Approach to Visitor Safety and Welfare

The meeting was led by His Majesty’s Consul Ms. Melissa McNichol-Antwine, with Pro Consul Ms. Claudine Santos and Vice Consul Ms. Karen Buhat. It gathered representatives from various national government agencies and local government units, including the DOH, BFP, PNP, NBI, PCG, BJMP, BI, the Provincial Government of Surigao del Norte, and the LGUs of General Luna, Del Carmen, and Dapa, alongside medical and social welfare offices. Discussions centered on establishing clear referral procedures, accessible communication channels, and coordinated response systems to provide timely and appropriate assistance to visitors requiring support.

Strengthening Prevention and Response Mechanisms

DOT Caraga Tourism Works Officer Alyckssa Maye J. Castaños also presented an overview of the DOT Caraga SAFE-T Program under the RIACAT-VAWC. The program focuses on addressing gender-based violence, trafficking, and the sexual exploitation of children within the travel and tourism sector by strengthening prevention, reporting, referral, and response measures. The presentation further emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration among government agencies and other stakeholders in creating a safer, more responsive, and resilient tourism environment in Siargao. Through strengthened partnerships and coordinated action, the initiative reinforces the destination’s commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism.
