A Scholarship Arrives at the Right Time
GENERAL SANTOS CITY - For a fourth-year psychology student studying in General Santos City, a PHP20,000 educational grant is easing part of the cost of reaching the final stretch of college. Philippine Information Agency reported on September 28 that Irish Gaile Dizon, a student of General Santos Doctors’ Medical School Foundation Inc., received assistance under the Bawat Barangay Makikinabang program through the Office of the President’s Socio-Civic Projects Fund. Dizon, who lives in Tampakan, South Cotabato, said the grant will help cover tuition and related learning experience fees during her internship. Her story offers a timely look at education assistance reaching students attending institutions in GenSan.
From Barangay Funds to Student Support
The assistance is connected to a broader 2026 funding program that placed education among the uses of support distributed to barangays. PIA reported in May that 26 General Santos City barangays were allocated a combined PHP5.2 million, with PHP100,000 per barangay intended for scholarships and another PHP100,000 for community projects. Bombo Radyo General Santos later reported that each barangay’s scholarship portion could support five scholars with PHP20,000 each, giving the program a clear community-level structure. In Dizon’s case, that framework becomes personal: a public fund translates into help with the practical expenses of completing training.
A Small Grant With a Specific Purpose
Dizon’s situation also highlights the quieter side of education support: not every meaningful development needs to involve a new building or large public event. She is the eldest of three siblings, and PIA reported that farming is her family’s sole source of income, making assistance relevant as she completes her internship requirements. The report does not claim that the grant covers all of her educational expenses, only that it provides immediate help for tuition and related learning experience fees. For General Santos, where students from surrounding communities study, the story shows how city-based schools can become part of wider educational opportunities across SOCCSKSARGEN.
