A Week That Goes Beyond a Celebration
GENERAL SANTOS CITY- Elderly Filipino Week is observed every first week of October under Presidential Proclamation No. 470, issued in 1994. The National Commission of Senior Citizens says the 2026 observance is intended to recognize the contributions, rights, dignity, and aspirations of older persons. Its official campaign also stresses that senior citizens should not be viewed simply as recipients of government programs, but as people whose experiences and perspectives can help shape society. That message gives the 2026 celebration a broader purpose than a one-day tribute: it asks institutions and communities to consider how older persons participate in decisions that affect their lives.
DSWD’s Role Reaches Beyond Assistance
For DSWD Field Office XII, the occasion connects with its wider social-protection mandate for vulnerable and disadvantaged Filipinos. The department continues to implement the Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens, with DSWD reporting that Region XII had 145,875 beneficiaries served in the first and second quarters of 2026 as of June 9. The monthly ₱1,000 stipend is intended to help qualified indigent senior citizens with daily subsistence and medical needs. While financial assistance remains important, the 2026 Elderly Filipino Week theme places equal attention on dignity, rights, voice, and the ability of older Filipinos to remain part of community life.
GenSan’s Senior-Citizen Story Has a Longer History
General Santos City has previously hosted Elderly Filipino Week activities involving government agencies and senior citizens, including a 2025 opening event where more than 700 seniors from the city and nearby areas accessed medical, health, and dental services. DSWD was among the agencies that partnered in that activity, while the National Commission of Senior Citizens led the regional celebration. DSWD Field Office XII has also documented its participation in earlier Elderly Filipino Week activities, including assistance to senior citizens during a medical mission in General Santos City. The 2026 observance therefore sits within an established pattern of government programs for older residents, while this year’s theme places a stronger emphasis on recognizing seniors as rights-holders and contributors.
