ILOILO — The heat is on for Iloilo's young coffee artisans. The Kape 'Ta sa Merkado festival is hosting an Espresso Beverage Competition on August 25, 2026, at 2:00 PM, and registration is still open for talented college and university students ready to showcase their signature coffee creations.
A Test of Skill and Creativity
This contest is a showcase of the next generation of coffee talent. It invites student coffee enthusiasts from schools across Iloilo to demonstrate their skills and artistry. The competition challenges them to craft unique espresso drinks that highlight both technical ability and creative flair.
Teams of two players per school will face a series of challenging rounds. They must bring their own bar tools, such as milk frothers and blenders, while organizers provide the espresso machine and grinder. This setup ensures a level playing field where creativity is the key differentiator.
Three Rounds of Caffeinated Competition
The competition structure is designed to push participants beyond their comfort zones. The first round is the "Local Flavor Espresso Challenge," where teams must create a drink inspired by Filipino ingredients. Options include calamansi, tablea, ube, and mango, forcing competitors to think locally.
The second round introduces a twist with the "Mystery Ingredient Challenge." Competitors receive a surprise ingredient, revealed to be "Bunot" (coconut husk), and must build a signature beverage around it. The final round allows participants to showcase their ultimate creativity by crafting a unique signature drink and telling the story behind it.
A Spotlight on Ilonggo Coffee Culture
This competition is a key highlight of the week-long Kape 'Ta sa Merkado festival, running from August 22 to 28. The festival itself is part of Iloilo City's 89th Charter Anniversary celebration. It aims to celebrate the city's booming coffee scene and the local businesses that fuel it.
Mayor Raisa Treñas-Chu emphasized that the festival is designed to highlight Iloilo's growing coffee industry. It brings together local farmers, roasters, cafe owners, and entrepreneurs. The student competition, in particular, invests in the future of this vibrant sector.
Prizes and Recognition for Emerging Talent
The event will be held at the Iloilo Central Public Market, providing a bustling and authentic backdrop. Teams must serve two identical drinks for each challenge, and time limits are strictly enforced. Penalties are deducted for overtime, adding pressure to the competition.
The top three teams will receive cash prizes: ₱7,000 for first place, ₱5,000 for second, and ₱3,000 for third. Beyond the monetary reward, it is an opportunity for students to gain recognition within the local coffee community.
A Bridge Between Tradition and Modernity
The Kape 'Ta sa Merkado festival is strategically held at the public market to drive foot traffic to this traditional trade hub. By integrating modern coffee culture and youth talent, the city bridges the gap between heritage markets and current consumer trends. It creates a vibrant space where tradition meets innovation.
An Invitation to Compete
The call is out for all passionate student baristas in Iloilo. This is a chance to represent their school and leave a mark on the local coffee scene. Registration is available through the official form, with on-site registration also possible one hour before the event.
The Espresso Beverage Competition is more than just a contest; it is a celebration of creativity, culture, and community. It is a platform where the next generation of coffee leaders can shine. The city is eager to see the talent that will emerge.
