ILOILO — Following the success of the first Library sa Merkado at the Iloilo City Central Market, the Zonta Club of Iloilo City, Inc., in partnership with the Iloilo City Government, is opening a second library at the Iloilo Terminal Public Market. The launch is set for October 24, 2026, at 9:00 AM.
A Growing Movement for Literacy
The initiative expands from one library to two, with organizers expressing hope that many more will follow. The first Library sa Merkado has already become a welcoming space for children who love to read and curious minds eager to discover new ideas. The second branch aims to replicate that success in a different market community.
The new library will occupy the second floor of the Rice and Grains Section at the Iloilo Terminal Public Market. This strategic location places books and learning resources right where families already gather for daily errands. Parents can now combine market visits with opportunities for their children to explore stories and expand their imaginations.
Inspiring Young Minds Through Access
The initiative targets every child who dreams of a brighter future. By making reading materials accessible in familiar public spaces, the program removes barriers that often prevent children from visiting traditional libraries. Distance, cost, and unfamiliarity with formal library systems are no longer obstacles.
Organizers believe that nurturing a love for learning early in life opens doors to endless possibilities. The library provides more than just books; it offers a safe, quiet corner where young minds can flourish. Volunteers and partner organizations help ensure that the space remains welcoming and well-stocked with age-appropriate materials.
Zonta's Mission for Women and Girls
The project aligns with Zonta International's broader mission to build a better world for women and girls. Literacy is a foundational tool for empowerment, enabling girls to pursue education and make informed choices about their futures. By investing in reading programs, Zonta and its partners contribute to long-term social progress.
The Zonta Club of Iloilo City has a strong track record of community service. Its members actively support initiatives that uplift women, children, and underserved families. The Library sa Merkado project reflects the club's commitment to practical, grassroots action that yields measurable benefits.
A Partnership That Works
The collaboration between Zonta and the Iloilo City Government demonstrates the power of public-private partnerships. The city provides the venue and logistical support, while Zonta supplies books, materials, and volunteer manpower. Together, they create a sustainable model that can be replicated in other markets.
Local market vendors and barangay officials have also expressed support for the project. Their cooperation ensures that the library integrates smoothly into the daily life of the market community. Children who visit with their parents can stay and read while adults complete their shopping.
An Open Invitation to the Community
Everyone is invited to attend the opening ceremony on October 24 at 9:00 AM. The event will feature a short program, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and the first storytelling session for children. Families from nearby barangays are encouraged to visit and explore the new space.
As the program grows, organizers hope to add more libraries in other public markets across Iloilo City. Each new branch represents another step toward a more literate and empowered community. The dream of a library in every market is slowly becoming a reality.
