ILOILO — The rich aroma of local coffee is filling the historic Iloilo Central Public Market as the city launches its first-ever Kape 'Ta sa Merkado festival. The weeklong celebration, running from August 22 to 28, 2026, invites everyone to rediscover the heart of Ilonggo coffee culture
A Festival Rooted in Community
The event is a key part of Iloilo City's 89th Charter Anniversary celebration. It brings together 24 local coffee merchants, including 10 shops that operate within the public markets themselves. This celebration aims to promote homegrown coffee businesses and create new opportunities for them to reach more customers.
Benjamin Niño IV, marketing officer of the Local Economic Enterprise Office, explained the vision behind the event. He stated, "We want to create a new story for our coffee owners." The goal is to show that the city's coffee culture is vibrant and extends beyond the market's walls, attracting both locals and tourists.
A Stage for Local Flavors and Talent
The festival is a comprehensive showcase of the Ilonggo coffee industry's journey. It features a range of activities, from coffee tasting and a products bazaar to discussions on the bean's path from farm to cup. Attendees can enjoy coffee appreciation sessions and manual brewing demonstrations.
Competitions add an element of excitement, including a Latte Art Competition open to all and an Espresso Beverage Competition exclusive to students. A micro, small, and medium enterprises business forum will also be held, covering franchise opportunities and success stories. Complementary food merchants were invited, ensuring the festival offers the perfect pairing for every cup.
More Than Just a Drink
Mayor Raisa Treñas-Chu emphasized the deeper significance of the festival, highlighting the human stories behind every cup. She noted that coffee is part of daily Ilonggo life and identity, connecting farmers, roasters, cafe owners, and consumers. The celebration is a tribute to their collective hard work and contribution to the local economy.
The mayor underscored that supporting local products directly helps Ilonggo families and small businesses thrive. "When we support local, we help our own people rise," she shared. This festival is a direct effort to build a community where markets are alive and local products are valued.
An Annual Celebration in the Making
The city government aims to make Kape 'Ta sa Merkado an annual event, signaling a long-term commitment to the local coffee industry. The festival has already successfully drawn foot traffic to the public market, stimulating economic activity and showcasing the market as a cultural destination. The initiative is a testament to Iloilo's vibrant community spirit and its growing reputation as a food and culture hub.
