CEBU — The Cebu City Government honored six outstanding artists for their contributions to Bisaya music during the inaugural Bisaya Music Festival 2026, held on October 3 at Plaza Independencia. The event marked the first music festival in the Visayas dedicated exclusively to Bisaya music and culture.

A Historic Celebration of Bisaya Music

Organized by the Cebu City Government through the Office of the City Mayor, the festival gathered singers, bands, composers, musicians, songwriters, performers, producers, cultural groups, and independent artists. The celebration was envisioned as an annual cultural and musical gathering that highlights the region's rich musical heritage.

Mayor Nestor D. Archival delivered a message of support during the event, which featured performances from various Bisaya artists throughout the afternoon and evening. The festival aimed to promote live performance, artist recognition, cultural presentation, tourism, and support for the regional creative industry.

Six Icons Recognized

A major highlight was the Bisaya Music Icon Awards, which recognized six artists composed of three living and three posthumous honorees. The recognition honored artists whose body of work demonstrated exceptional artistic merit, cultural significance, and lasting influence on Bisaya music.

Honorees were selected based on verifiable contributions covering their role in promoting Bisaya language and culture, pioneering achievements, influence on succeeding generations, and consistent excellence. The criteria also considered recognition and respect from the music community, ensuring that only the most deserving artists received the honor.

The festival featured a diverse lineup of Bisaya artists who graced the stage at Plaza Independencia. Among those who performed were Joseph Gara, WONGGOYS, Victoria Leslie, ARZA, Bernadeth Jumalon, Jerika Teodorico, Akisha Keith, Karla Villondo, Leeyan, Lynel Sucalit, and Oh! Caraga.

Other performers included Iping Amores, Hometown Kids, NOMER, Kurt Fick, Esther's, Franzel Kaye, Jewel Villaflores, The Qings, Martin Taneo, Ferdinand Aragon, Kent Charcos, and JIMMY RICKS. The diverse lineup reflected the breadth of talent across the Visayas and the enduring appeal of regional music.

A Festival With Purpose

The Bisaya Music Festival positions itself as a platform for celebrating the music and traditions that connect communities across the region. Organizers emphasized that the event shines a spotlight on artists who keep these traditions alive while inspiring emerging talents to pursue excellence.

The celebration continued with performances from the main acts before culminating in a fireworks display at Plaza Independencia. The successful staging demonstrated the Cebu City Government's commitment to supporting local music and recognizing artists who have preserved Bisaya identity through generations.

Legacy That Inspires Future Artists

By honoring these icons, the festival ensures their legacies are preserved and passed on to future generations. The recognition also inspires emerging artists, knowing their contributions to Bisaya music will be celebrated and remembered. The event set a strong foundation for what organizers hope will become a cherished annual tradition.
