PHILIPPINES — The Department of Tourism (DOT) is moving on multiple fronts to strengthen international arrivals and elevate the Philippine travel experience. From high-level talks with Japan to tapping global pop icons and preparing for a major regional summit, the agency is executing a bold, coordinated strategy.

A New Japan-Philippines Tourism Dialogue

Japanese Tourism Minister Kaneko Yasushi met with Philippine officials in Manila on August 12, 2026. Both sides agreed to hold the first joint working group meeting on tourism in Nagasaki this December. The meeting will coincide with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

This new working group creates a structured platform for deeper cooperation. It aims to expand tourism exchanges, improve travel facilitation, and open more opportunities for hospitality and maritime professionals. The move reflects a shared commitment to long-term bilateral growth in the tourism sector.

SB19: A Global Voice for Philippine Travel

The DOT has tapped P-pop superstars SB19 as the country’s newest tourism ambassadors. The group’s massive international fan base, known as A'TIN, spans the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Japan, and ASEAN. Their appointment is designed to leverage music tourism and inspire fans to visit the Philippines.

Before their formal appointment, SB19 met with DOT officials to discuss campaigns that would promote the country to Filipinos and global audiences. The group’s popularity among second-generation overseas Filipinos offers a unique pathway for cultural reconnection. Their concerts and tours become opportunities to showcase Philippine heritage and destinations.

Preparing for ASEAN 2026 on Home Soil

The Philippines is also ramping up preparations for its hosting of the ASEAN Summit 2026. Major diplomatic meetings are scheduled across Cebu, Bohol, and Manila. The DOT is working closely with relevant government agencies and event partners to ensure a seamless and impressive hosting experience.

Hosting the summit positions the country as a regional hub for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions. It accelerates infrastructure upgrades in host provinces and boosts investor confidence. The event is expected to leave a lasting positive impact on local tourism economies.

Building Safer, Smarter Travel Experiences

The DOT is strengthening public safety by expanding the Tourist-Oriented Police for Community Order and Protection program with the Philippine National Police. This initiative places trained officers in key destinations to assist visitors and maintain order. Enhanced security gives travelers greater peace of mind.

The department is also coordinating with LANDBANK to develop digital tourist payment systems. These systems will make transactions more convenient for visitors and local businesses alike. The move aligns with efforts to modernize the overall travel experience across the country.

A Unified Push for Hospitality Growth

Engagements with private sector leaders are also underway. The DOT met with Philippine Hotel Owners Association Executive Director Benito Bengzon Jr. to align on the industry’s expansion plans. The association is working on a pipeline that will add 15,000 hotel rooms across 55 new projects through 2028.

This growth in room capacity supports the expected increase in both leisure and business travelers. It also creates jobs for Filipinos in construction, hospitality, and support services. By aligning with developers and operators, the DOT ensures that infrastructure keeps pace with tourism demand.

The DOT’s multi-pronged approach demonstrates a clear vision for the sector. From international partnerships to cultural ambassadors and safety improvements, each initiative reinforces the others. The goal is a tourism industry that is inclusive, competitive, and globally recognized.
