LEYTE, LEYTE — Local conservation and disaster response officers in the municipality of Leyte successfully conducted a joint wildlife rescue operation in Sitio Cabariwan, Barangay Tapol, successfully securing two protected birds of prey for rehabilitation and eventual release.

The joint action was executed by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Leyte following reports from local residents:
Rescued Species: Rescuers secured a juvenile South Philippine Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus pinskeri)—a rare raptor endemic to the country—alongside a Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus), locally known as a Lawin.
Veterinary Evaluation: Both raptors underwent comprehensive physical assessments to ensure health, stability, and proper nutrition following their recovery.
Path to the Wild: The specimens are being turned over to provincial wildlife management authorities for specialized care, rehabilitation, and planned reintroduction into protected native forest habitats across Eastern Visayas.
