ILOILO CITY — The city's vibrant coffee scene is set to welcome a new wave of young talent. The Espresso Beverage Competition is calling on student coffee enthusiasts from universities and colleges across Iloilo to showcase their creativity and skills on August 25, 2026, at the Iloilo Central Public Market.
A Platform for Young Baristas
This competition is exclusively for students currently enrolled in any school in Iloilo. It offers a unique venue for aspiring baristas to test their abilities in a real-world setting. The event, starting at 2:00 PM, promises to be a dynamic showcase of innovation and skill within the local coffee community.
Participants are required to form teams of two players per school. This format encourages collaboration and peer learning. Each team must bring their own essential bar tools, including a bar tool set, milk frother, blender, knife, and chopping board. Organizers will supply the espresso machine, grinder, ice, local ingredients, and milk to ensure a level playing field.
A Creative Challenge: From Local to Signature
The competition is structured around three distinct rounds designed to test creativity under pressure. The first round, the "Local Flavor Espresso Challenge," requires teams to create a drink inspired by Filipino ingredients. Competitors can choose from a vibrant palette of local flavors, including calamansi, coconut, tablea, muscovado, ube, mango, and pineapple.
Each drink must contain espresso and at least one locally sourced ingredient. Teams have 10 minutes to prepare their beverage and an additional 2 minutes to explain their creation. This round emphasizes the fusion of world-class espresso with deeply rooted Filipino tastes, challenging students to think beyond traditional coffee recipes.
Mystery Ingredient and Signature Stories
The second round introduces a "Mystery Ingredient Challenge." Teams receive a secret local ingredient, adding an element of surprise and spontaneity. They must then create a signature espresso beverage centered around that unexpected component. This tests their adaptability and deep understanding of flavor profiles, keeping the competition exciting and unpredictable.
The final round, "Create Your Inspired Signature Drink Challenge," is the ultimate test of creativity. Teams must develop a unique signature drink and, more importantly, tell the story behind it. This narrative element requires them to conceptualize a beverage that is not only delicious but also meaningful, transforming their drink into a personal expression.
A Celebration of Coffee Culture
The event, tagged with #KapeTaSaMerkado, highlights the growing coffee culture in Iloilo. Hosting the competition at the Central Public Market grounds the event in local commerce and community.
