PHILIPPINES — The Philippines has once again asserted its dominance in Asian tourism, securing six major titles at the World Travel Awards Asia, Oceania and Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony 2026. The awards were presented on September 27 at CROSSROADS Maldives, marking another milestone for the country's travel industry.
Eight Straight Years as Asia's Dive Capital
The Philippines claimed Asia's Leading Dive Destination for the eighth consecutive year, reinforcing its reputation for world-class marine biodiversity. The country's coral reefs, diverse marine life, and thriving dive communities continue to attract enthusiasts from across the globe.
Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay said the government will further establish diving as a key tourism product in 2027. She emphasized improving access and logistics to dive destinations while strengthening promotions that showcase the country's exceptional marine and natural assets. Safety and frontline training remain priorities.
Beach and Island Honors Retained
The Philippines also won Asia's Leading Beach Destination for the ninth time and Asia's Leading Island Destination for the third straight year. Boracay retained its title as Asia's Leading Luxury Island Destination, marking its third consecutive victory in the category. The Department of Tourism was named Asia's Leading Tourist Board for the fourth time.
These recognitions reflect sustained efforts to balance tourism growth with environmental stewardship. The Department of Tourism has prioritized sustainable practices across popular destinations, addressing challenges such as overtourism and carrying capacity. Visitor management and infrastructure improvements have accompanied these efforts.
San Fernando's Historic Cultural Win
The City of San Fernando, Pampanga earned Asia's Leading Cultural City Destination 2026, marking the Philippines' first victory in the category. The recognition highlights the city's rich heritage, traditions, crafts, culinary offerings, and festivals, particularly the world-renowned Giant Lantern Festival.
This win elevates Pampanga's profile on the international stage, drawing attention to Central Luzon's cultural treasures. Local officials and tourism stakeholders see the award as validation of years spent preserving and promoting Kapampangan identity. It also opens opportunities for increased visitor traffic and cultural exchange.
Nine Industry Awards for Filipino Brands
Philippine tourism players brought home nine Asia-level awards, led by Philippine Airlines as Asia's Leading Cultural Airline. Savoy Hotel Manila was named Asia's Leading Airport Hotel, while Amanpulo and Discovery Primea earned Asia's Leading Private Island Resort and Asia's Leading Business Hotel, respectively.
Admiral Hotel Manila-MGallery won Asia's Leading Design Hotel, and Ascott Bonifacio Global City Manila was recognized as Asia's Leading Serviced Apartments. City of Dreams Manila, Fili Hotel Bridgetowne, and Okada Manila also received honors in casino, luxury development, and entertainment categories.
Building Momentum for 2027
Regional winners advance to the WTA Grand Final, where they compete against victors from other regional heats for World categories. Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards recognizes excellence across global travel, tourism, and hospitality through regional and global recognition programs.
Angara-Mathay stressed that the momentum from these wins should translate into tangible improvements. The goal is to make diving and water-based activities safer, more accessible, and easier to experience, supported by efficient services and better-connected destinations. The Philippines now sets its sights on the grand final.
