Sugarcane farmers and agricultural laborers affected by a crop pest outbreak are receiving financial assistance through the Department of Social Welfare and Development in the Negros Island Region (DSWD-NIR), providing support to thousands of beneficiaries.
The assistance was distributed under the UPLIFT Disaster Assistance Program, with each beneficiary receiving ₱10,125 to help address needs following the impact of the red-striped soft scale insect on sugarcane production.
Financial Assistance Reaches Affected Workers
A total of 5,834 beneficiaries received financial assistance through the program.
The payout was conducted by DSWD-NIR in coordination with local government offices in Canlaon City, reaching sugarcane farmers and laborers affected by the pest outbreak.
The assistance aims to provide financial support to those whose livelihoods have been affected, helping beneficiaries manage household needs during a challenging period for the sugarcane sector.
Supporting Sugarcane Communities
Sugarcane farming and related agricultural work provide livelihoods for many families. When crop pests affect production, farmers and laborers may face disruptions that can also affect their income. Through the UPLIFT Disaster Assistance Program, DSWD-NIR is extending financial support to eligible beneficiaries affected by the situation. The initiative highlights the role of government assistance in responding to the needs of vulnerable agricultural communities. Coordination between DSWD and local government offices also helps facilitate the distribution of assistance to intended recipients.
Strengthening Community Support in Negros Island Region
The financial assistance reflects ongoing efforts to help affected communities cope with livelihood challenges. For sugarcane farmers and laborers, the aid provides additional resources as they navigate the effects of the pest outbreak. Programs such as UPLIFT form part of broader social welfare efforts to provide assistance to communities facing difficult circumstances and support their immediate needs.
