Students Learn Skills That Can Matter During Emergencies

BOHOL - Disaster preparedness is gaining another layer of support in Bohol as 170 fourth-year Hospitality Management and Tourism Management students participated in a Basic Life Support–Standard First Aid and Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management System lecture and demonstration on September 22, 2026. The activity was held at the Information Resource Center Hall of the University of Bohol and provided students with practical information on first aid, emergency response, and disaster preparedness. For students preparing to enter the hospitality and tourism sector, these skills can be particularly useful because they may eventually work in hotels, restaurants, resorts, tour operations, transportation services, and other environments where they interact with large numbers of people.

Preparedness Extends Beyond Emergency Services

Basic emergency knowledge can help communities respond more effectively while professional responders are on their way. The training introduced participants to appropriate first-aid practices and the broader Philippine DRRM system, helping connect individual emergency response skills with the country's organized disaster-management framework. For tourism workers, preparedness can involve recognizing potential hazards, knowing how to respond to injuries, communicating during emergencies, and understanding when professional assistance is needed. These abilities can complement the technical and customer-service skills students develop through their hospitality and tourism education.

Building a More Resilient Tourism Community

Tourism is closely connected to Bohol's communities, natural attractions, transportation networks, accommodations, and public spaces, making preparedness an important part of maintaining a safe destination. Training future tourism professionals can help extend disaster-awareness practices into workplaces and communities as students move into their careers. Within the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark, where tourism is connected with the island's natural and cultural resources, strengthening preparedness can also support a broader approach to resilience. Activities that combine education, emergency skills, and disaster-risk awareness can help prepare young professionals to contribute to safer tourism experiences and more resilient communities.
