A Satellite Signal Reaches Aspang
GENERAL SANTOS CITY - Aspang is now among the Mindanao communities benefiting from a satellite connectivity initiative led by unconnected.org and STEMEd Philippines Inc. The program uses Low Earth Orbit satellite technology to bring internet access to underserved Indigenous Peoples communities and schools. According to unconnected.org, connectivity has already been provided in Aspang, General Santos City, alongside Macambol National High School in Mati City. The project receives funding support from the BIMP-EAGA Korea Cooperation Fund, with the Mindanao Development Authority, Department of Education, National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, and local government units supporting the initiative. This gives Aspang students access to a digital resource that can complement the school's existing learning environment.
Internet Access Becomes Part of the Lesson
The project is not limited to installing equipment and leaving schools to figure out what comes next. Participating communities receive training on using and maintaining the satellite connectivity systems, while teachers and learners are introduced to STEM and STEAM lesson plans designed around internet access and real-world situations. The published project report says ten STEM lessons have already been completed, covering subjects such as tracking storms through meteorological information and understanding how civil engineering affects everyday life. An IP Community Internet Café has also been established as a potential space for learning, e-commerce, and local innovation. In Aspang, connectivity therefore becomes a teaching resource rather than simply another utility.
A Digital Doorway for a Remote Community
One particularly encouraging part of the project is its emphasis on continued community use. The organization says the connectivity hardware and software will remain with participating Indigenous communities, allowing the technology to continue supporting learning after the initial project activities. This matters because digital access can be useful in many different ways: students can explore educational materials, teachers can access online resources, and community members can learn how connectivity may support other activities.
