GENERAL SANTOS CITY - House Bill No. 9382 proposes the establishment of the Mindanao State University–General Santos City Campus College of Medicine. MSU-General Santos already has a College of Medicine presence, and the university reported that its medical students participated in the 15th Association of Philippine Medical Colleges–Student Network Mindanao Convention in January 2026. Ninety MSU-General Santos medical students and student leaders represented the school during the gathering, where the institution earned Overall First Runner-Up among participating medical schools. This existing activity provides useful context for the proposed legislation: the bill seeks to establish the medical college within MSU-General Santos through a formal legislative framework, while the campus already has students pursuing medical education and participating in regional academic activities.
A Potential New Route for Aspiring Doctors
If enacted, the proposed College of Medicine could give students in General Santos and neighboring parts of Mindanao another public-university option for pursuing medicine. The bill specifically envisions graduates who can contribute to healthcare needs in the region, while also assigning the college responsibilities in research and extension work. The measure was transmitted to the Senate after its House approval, meaning it should not yet be described as an operating new medical school or an enacted law. Still, its progress is worth watching because a locally based public medical program could bring medical education, community-oriented training, and regional workforce development closer together within General Santos.
